ROS bag & sensor bandwidth calculator
Plan the experiment before the disk fills. Estimate camera and LiDAR throughput, network bandwidth and ROS bag storage. Model multiple cameras, message overhead and an assumed compression ratio.

How to use this calculator
- Enter camera format, camera count and frame rate. Set bytes/pixel from the actual message encoding.
- Add LiDAR points per scan, point_step bytes and scan rate, or enter zero points to omit LiDAR.
- Set recording duration, planning overhead and measured compression ratio. Compare estimated throughput with your disk and network measurements.
Formula & convention
Camera B/s = width × height × bytes/pixel × FPS × cameras. LiDAR B/s = points/scan × bytes/point × scans/s. Planned B/s = total × (1 + overhead/100) ÷ compression ratio.
Worked example
One 1920×1080 RGB8 camera at 30 FPS produces 186.624 MB/s before overhead. Ten minutes is 111.9744 GB in decimal units, without compression.
Assumptions & limits
This is a planning estimate, not a rosbag2 benchmark. RGB8 is 3 bytes/pixel; depth formats differ. Point padding, row_step, serialization, indexes, metadata, retransmissions, CPU load and burst traffic can change results. Compression ratio is an input, never a promise. The same planning factor is applied to all streams.
